Credit Card Mandates

Data shows that mandates on the credit card payments system hurt the very people they aim to help.

Whether it is broad credit card mandates, such as card processing restrictions and government-imposed interchange limits, or interest rate caps on credit cards, these efforts negatively impact consumers. This is especially true for small communities, low-income households, and marginalized and underserved consumers. Efforts to impose these changes are concerning to individuals and the economy at large.

America’s Credit Unions opposes arbitrary rate caps that hurt affordability and access to credit. Learn more about advocacy efforts on this topic by visiting the Rate Caps and Fees issues page.

America’s Credit Unions also opposes credit card mandates that would result in the utter disruption of the electronic card payment system. This includes legislation aimed at changing the credit card payments system, which would impact fraud protection by limiting interchange.
