August recess brings in-district advocacy momentum
Across the country, from New York to Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Wyoming, leagues and credit unions are maintaining strong advocacy momentum with in-district visits with policymakers throughout the August recess.
The GoWest Credit Union Association connected with the Congressional delegations in states it serves.
Together with Oregon credit union advocates, GoWest met with:
- Senate Banking Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D, and Rep. Maxine Dexter, D, in Portland. The group thanked both for their support of credit unions’ tax status and discussed housing challenges and increases in fraud and scams; and
- Rep. Andrea Salinas, D, in Wilsonville to thank her for supporting the credit union tax exemption and efforts to modernize of the Federal Credit Union Act. Salinas has co-sponsored numerous credit union-supported bills, including the SAFE Banking Act and legislation to increase housing accessibility.
GoWest also met with Sens. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, Jim Risch, R-Idaho, John Barrasso, R-Wyo., and Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., at events in the two states to discuss implementation of the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins Act (GENIUS) Act, and Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) funding.
Washington credit unions and GoWest met in Vancouver with Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Wash. to discuss fraud prevention and financial education, laying the groundwork for future collaboration.
This week, the New York Credit Union Association (NYCUA) met with Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s, D-N.Y., financial services staffer to discuss centered on the legislative and regulatory issues most important to New York’s credit unions and the more than million members they serve.
The NYCUA team also shared how credit unions continue to advance financial inclusion, promote consumer protection, and strengthen communities across the state.
