Committees explore wide range of credit union policy

While America’s Credit Unions’ leaders directly engaged with policymakers last week on credit union priorities, several member committees also conducted meetings to assess the status of certain issues and what credit unions should be planning for going forward.

The World Affairs Committee discussed the importance of understanding international regulatory developments, such as those in Europe and Africa, and mapping them to U.S. credit union issues. America’s Credit Unions Vice President of Policy Engagement and Credit Union Operations Ann Petros facilitated a comprehensive discussion on global housing affordability, referencing cooperative housing approaches in Austria, Germany, and Singapore.

The discussion covered structural barriers that can exist, but also the need to address these issues to replicate successful international models in the U.S.

World Council of Credit Unions Senior Director of International Advocacy Erin O’Hern shared the latest on the 2026 World Credit Union Conference in Sydney, Australia. Financial cooperatives from more than 50 countries will be represented, and sessions will cover topics such as governance, fraud, regulatory issues, and digital money.

The Industry Relations, Economics, and Share Fund Committee also met to discuss the latest on:

  • NCUA board nominee John Crews, including the next steps in the confirmation process and previous credit union engagement with him;
  • Recent regulatory and legislative developments on stablecoins; and
  • Financial performance of the credit union system in the first quarter of 2026.

America’s Credit Unions will continue to engage with members, and its issue-centric committees, to collect feedback on credit union policy priorities.
