Credit union-backed candidates win in TN primaries, more primaries ahead
In the Tennessee primary, all candidates backed by America’s Credit Unions and the Tennessee Credit Union League won. Notably, Rep. Andy Ogles, R, beat a challenge from City Councilwoman Courtney Johnston with 56% of the vote.
“Our state primary had extremely low turnout, which affected multiple races. However, on the federal level we were pleased to see all our supported candidates come out ahead. We now turn our focus to working with those candidates in the general election,” said TCUL’s Chief Advocacy Officer Sarah Waters.
Four states will hold their primary elections tomorrow – Kansas, Michigan, Missouri and Washington. America’s Credit Unions is supporting three candidates in Kansas, 12 candidates in Michigan, five candidates in Missouri, and seven candidates in Washington. In Hawaii’s primary on Saturday, Aug. 10, an additional three credit union-supported candidates are in the running.
In Kansas, America’s Credit Unions and the Cornerstone League support former Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt, R, in the open seat to replace outgoing member Rep. Jake LaTurner, R. In Michigan, the Michigan Credit Union League and America’s Credit Unions are supporting Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., in her Senate run to fill the seat currently held by Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., who decided not to seek re-election.
Credit union-backed candidates have a success rate over 98% so far in the 2024 cycle. Election results are available on America’s Credit Unions’ Credit Union Elections Hub and will be updated throughout the primaries and general election.
