Credit union CEO encourages doing the right thing for community
Helping others is a personal and professional priority for Skyline Financial Federal Credit Union President/CEO James Higgins, something he’s dedicated his life to. His people-first mentality is reflected in the credit unions’ outreach and efforts to support 28 foster children and the Connecticut communities Skyline serves, and are highlighted in a recent America’s Credit Unions Blog post.
Skyline launched the Skyline Benefits Navigator in June 2024 in partnership with Starlight, a government program matching platform. It helps connect eligible users with corresponding government benefits, ranging from SNAP and heating assistance to food share programs. Skyline was among the first credit unions in the country to adopt the platform, which is free and open to anyone, not just members.
The credit union has also formed valuable partnerships with local non-profits. Skyline’s efforts include granting a foster care organization a mortgage and issuing lines of credit to support young adults who have aged out of the foster care system.
“We have to be the people we needed when we were younger,” said Higgins, who is also known for challenging fellow credit union leaders to think bigger, regardless of their institution’s size.
