Credit union’s deep community connection

Credit unions exist as a trusted partner in their communities, and that often extends beyond providing financial services. Capital Credit Union uses its Elevate Communities program to assist first responders in rural Wisconsin, distributing more than $800,000 since 2018.

America’s Credit Unions Blog details how the program fills important needs that may otherwise be left unaddressed. In just one example, a credit union visit to a local sheriff’s office last year revealed that deputies didn’t have triage kits in their squad cars, despite regularly responding to emergencies. A grant from the Elevate Communities program funded triage kits and automated external defibrillators for each patrol car. That was only one of 19 grants given out in 2025.

The grant program has provided everything from e-bikes for the Green Bay Police Department to gear washers and drying racks for the Appleton Fire Department.

“We always say that we’re here because of our members and we’re here because of our community,” Director of Community Relations Laura Welsh shared. “The more we can give back and make our community stronger and better, then we’re only doing our due justice for our members.”
