Credit unions give back ahead of Thanksgiving

As food insecurity reaches record levels, credit unions across the country are stepping up their holiday hunger relief efforts. A new blog post highlights just a few of many credit union programs seeking to positively impact communities ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Veridian Credit Union continues one of the nation’s longest-running credit union holiday traditions, serving approximately 1,300 meals in northeast Iowa and pledging $100,000 to food security programs across three states.

Other credit unions are launching major campaigns or matching drives, including Truliant Federal Credit Union’s "Donate Dollars - Feeding Our Neighbors in Need" campaign with a $50,000 match for regional food banks and LorMet Community Federal Credit Union’s tenth annual member match campaign, donating $35,000 to provide an estimated 210,000 meals to families facing heightened food insecurity.

Other credit unions across the country are implementing diverse approaches to holiday hunger relief, including:

Collaborative and statewide initiatives have also exceeded expectations. The Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger has raised more than $238,000 through its Ending Hunger Challenge. Last week in Kansas City, attendees of America's Credit Unions' Small Credit Union Conference teamed with employees of Dimensional Innovations of Overland Park, Kansas, to package donated food to feed more than 2,400 people.

Through meal programs, food drives, and coordinated volunteer efforts, credit unions across the country are leveraging their community roots to help ensure families have access to food this Thanksgiving.
