Electing credit union champions is critical for the movement

Elections matter, and alongside League partners, America’s Credit Unions is hard at work on electing a pro-credit union 120th Congress. Writing in CUInsight, Head of Political Affairs Trey Hawkins details the years of work that go into supporting credit union champions nationwide.

“The goal: to fill as many seats in Congress as possible with legislators who support the credit union difference. Legislators who know that the credit union tax status is one of the most pro-consumer public policies that exist today,” he wrote.

The credit union difference is bipartisan, Hawkins adds, noting many examples of an otherwise divided Congress coming together to advance credit union priorities in this Congress.

This includes supporting Reps. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., and Young Kim, R-Calif., through primary challenges in newly drawn district; champions like Rep. Andy Barr, R-Ky., as he attempts to move up to the Senate, and supporters to fill open seats like Illinois state Rep. LaShawn Ford running for the seat left open by Rep. Danny Davis’s retirement.
