FinCEN issues reminder on suspicious transactions associated with synthetic opioids
Credit unions and other financial institutions are being called upon to help crack down on synthetic opioid trafficking. The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) issued a reminder in connection with Overdose Awareness Week. They ask financial institutions to monitor for and report suspicious transactional activity related to the illicit fentanyl supply chain and trafficking of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.
The agency offers resources about the trafficking of fentanyl and fentanyl analogues, as well as other synthetic opioids, the precursor chemicals and associated manufacturing equipment:
- Supplemental Advisory on the Procurement of Precursor Chemicals and Manufacturing Equipment Used for the Synthesis of Illicit Fentanyl and Other Synthetic Opioids (June 2024); and
- Advisory to Financial Institutions on Illicit Financial Schemes and Methods Related to the Trafficking of Fentanyl and Other Synthetic Opioids (August 2019).
