Hawkins: Credit union champions impact policy for the better

“Credit union champions” are lawmakers  who positively impact policy for credit unions and are essential to achieving credit unions’ advocacy goals. As this year’s election approaches, America’s Credit Union Head of Political Affairs Trey Hawkins detailed the role elections play in the advocacy process and why it’s important to support candidates who support credit unions, in a CUInsight op-ed

“They continue to stand with us, and that’s why we stand with our credit union champions when it counts,” Hawkins wrote. “They stand with us as for-profit banks attack our tax status with cherry-picked information designed to mislead. And they’ll stand with us as tax reform discussions become central with the 2025 expiration of many Tax Cuts and Jobs Act provisions.”

Credit unions are supporting several candidates in tough elections this Nov. 5 — including Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., and Rep. Zach Nunn, R-Iowa — because they have demonstrated a willingness to create policy to help credit unions serve more members and provide needed financial services.

Hawkins notes that regardless of who controls the House, Senate, committees, or subcommittees, credit unions are well-positioned because of bipartisan supporters already in Congress.

The Credit Union Elections Hub will be updated with results starting Wednesday morning, and America’s Credit Unions will host a post-election webinar Thursday, Nov. 7, starting at 2 p.m. Eastern to address what the results mean for credit unions.
