Leagues, credit unions continue advocacy momentum over pre-election recess
Election years mean Congress spends less time in Washington, D.C, and more time in home districts, especially in the fall. Leagues and credit unions took advantage of the extra time with lawmakers back home to connect on priorities, particularly in advance of the post-election “lame duck” session that starts the week after the election.
Luminate – Louisiana’s Credit Unions met with Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., and Rep. Garrett Graves, R-La., to discuss key federal legislative issues impacting credit unions. Graves is not seeking re-election in November.
Louisiana credit unions also met with State Sen. Cleo Fields, D, who is currently running to succeed Graves in the 6th Congressional District. They discussed an upcoming state special session on tax reform.
At Credit Union House of Virginia, the Virginia Credit Union League hosted a lunch with Rep. Rob Wittman, R-Va., and credit leaders. The discussion centered on key issues including preserving the credit union tax exemption, rising fraud, and proposed changes to card interchange fees.
Rep. John Larson, D-Ct., met with the Credit Union League of Connecticut and several credit unions including American Eagle Financial Credit Union, America's First Network Credit Union, Police Credit Union of CT, and Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union. Larson is the ranking member of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security and serves on the Subcommittee on Tax.
