May, Nussle discuss importance of service in leadership
The Rt. Honorable Theresa May joined America’s Credit Unions President/CEO Jim Nussle Tuesday for a discussion during the organization’s 2024 Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC).
As only the second woman to serve as Britain’s Prime Minister, May shared her perspective on politics, geopolitical relations, working to find compromise, and stories from her time of service.
Much of the discussion focused on leadership qualities, including the distinction between positions of power and positions of service. May stressed that political leaders should be focused on “service to the people they represent,” but noted that unfortunately, in politics today, “too many people see it about themselves and not the people they are there to serve.”
May also shared that while she doesn’t think of herself as a role model, “it’s important for women to be seen in these positions.”
“It’s that old adage: If you can see it, you can be it,” May said. “So, the young girl who sees a woman as prime minister is going to think, ‘I can do that.’”
May and Nussle also discussed Brexit, the war in Ukraine, and the importance of democracy.
America’s Credit Unions’ 2024 GAC concludes today as attendees continue to meet with lawmakers directly on Capitol Hill. This week in Washington, D.C., nearly 6,000 credit union advocates came together for the first time as America’s Credit Unions to tout the credit union difference and elevate industry priorities.
