New blog: Profiling the impact of one CDFI credit union

Credit unions can make a profound impact on its community, in a variety of ways. America’s Credit Unions’ recent blog posts profile several credit unions that demonstrate that difference.

An Iowa credit union is coupling its credit union mission with Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) certification to open doors for first time homeowners.

Community 1st Credit Union's CDFI-funded programs have helped six hundred Iowa families achieve homeownership.  Since 2018, the credit union has distributed almost $2.5 million in down payment assistance. Community 1st provides down payment assistance grants of up to $5,000 to first-time homebuyers. The grants have reached more than 110 communities across Iowa, spanning nearly half of the state's 99 counties.

Involvement in the Compliance and Risk Council resulted in invaluable collaboration, insight, and leadership with her peers for American Airlines Credit Union Senior Vice President and General Counsel Faith Anderson. She describes the opportunities for growth in a recent blog post.  Joining the council in 2020, Anderson helped establish the governance framework and held a leadership role in the group’s initial stages.

Now serving as First Vice Chair of the Council’s Executive Committee, which oversees all seven Councils, Anderson sees her role not only as a leader, but as a connector. Read more about the benefits of networking with peers and what Anderson has learned about the industry’s collaborative culture.
