Nussle outlines policies to enable credit unions, members to thrive
Continuing to emphasize that supporting credit unions means supporting communities, America’s Credit Unions President/CEO Jim Nussle outlined credit union policy priorities in a letter to Congressional leaders Thursday.
“America’s Credit Unions’ 2025 policy priorities focus on protecting, empowering, and advancing credit unions. We are committed to fiercely advocating for forward-thinking policies that uplift people and communities through their financial partnerships with credit unions,” Nussle wrote. “Within the framework of these three areas, we are focused on developing a regulatory and legislative environment that enables credit unions—and ultimately our country—to thrive.”
Policies that will help to protect, empower, and advance credit unions include:
- Protecting the credit union tax status;
- Opposing efforts to increase financial institution liability under Regulation E;
- Protecting the interchange system;
- Preventing arbitrary barriers to consumers and businesses that rely on credit unions;
- Enacting CFPB reforms to establish stability and increased oversight;
- Protecting consumers’ and small businesses’ financial data;
- Giving more people and businesses the ability to join and partner with a credit union;
- Expanding and enhance credit unions’ ability to lend to consumers and small businesses;
- Supporting regulatory sandboxes, no action letters, and pilot programs focused on supporting credit union experimentation with new technologies or business models; and
- Supporting enhanced consumer access to housing.
