Showcasing the power of the credit union difference on Capitol Hill

The power of the credit union difference to change lives for the better was on full display Tuesday on Capitol Hill, as America’s Credit Unions staffed a booth at the Financial Literacy and Wealth Creation Caucus’s Financial Literacy Fair.

As one of more than 30 financial services organizations present at the second annual event, America’s Credit Unions’ advocacy team engaged members of Congress, staff, and others on how credit unions benefit members and communities.

“The mission of this caucus is to ensure members and staff have a proper financial education, giving them the resources and knowledge to help our constituents improve their financial literacy,” said Rep. Young Kim, R-Calif., caucus co-chair. An immigrant from South Korea who moved to the U.S. as a youth, Kim said proactively working to reach communities with financial education resources is an ongoing priority for the caucus and for her personally.

Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, caucus co-chair, said accessible financial services are needed now more than ever with so much economic uncertainty.

“This is a chance for everyone here today to showcase the incredible work that is being done financially to empower American individuals and households,” she said. “We also want to make sure we leverage your power to boost our economy.”

Both Kim and Beatty stopped by the America’s Credit Unions booth, where attendees could pick up copies of the credit union difference one-pager. The handout illustrates the billions in benefits credit unions bring to consumers, including helping small businesses, “curing” financial deserts, and providing services to underserved areas left behind by banks.

Abound Credit Union provided lifestyle and career-based budgeting workshop workbooks they created as an interactive resource to help members plan for their financial futures. The workbook allows users to examine their own budget and review multiple examples with various scenarios of income, lifestyles, and outcomes to help figure out how to reduce debt, save money, plan for the future, and more.

This is the second year the caucus hosted the event on Capitol Hill. America’s Credit Unions also staffed a booth at last year’s event.
