Simpson: Credit union unity is the only way forward

Describing himself as “all in” from the moment he learned about the credit union movement, America’s Credit Unions President/CEO Scott Simpson shared his career journey, highlights, and advice on the latest episode of The CUInsight Experience podcast.

Simpson described making the transition from Washington, D.C., to working for credit unions in his home state of Utah, and what lessons he learned that helped him get more deeply involved in the league system.

“I didn’t begin my career thinking I’d work in credit unions. I discovered it and instantly realized the beauty of using my kind of skillset defending cooperative finance,” he said. “The opportunity for people to have a transformative experience in their lives, that’s what I get to spend my day defending.”

He said unity within the credit union movement is one of his top priorities and is essential to the future of credit unions.

“The capacity we have to rally the credit union family, there’s only one way. The fracturing that could happen here is not a solution to the market reality that we are wildly outspent and out-resourced by the people who want to destroy this business model,” he said. “The only pathway is to restore the health and vitality of the family.”

The interview also covers his experience in previous bank-credit union fights, the importance of empathy in leadership, advice he’d give his younger self, and more.
