Urging Senate confirmation for NCUA nominee Crews
The NCUA board nominee John Crews must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate to officially take on the role, and America’s Credit Unions President/CEO Scott Simpson wrote to the Senate Banking Committee Tuesday in support of both Crews’ nomination and a swift confirmation process. Crews, currently Treasury deputy assistant secretary for financial institutions policy, was nominated in May to take the seat currently held by Chairman Kyle Hauptman.
Crews previously served as staff director for a Senate Banking subcommittee, special advisor for economic policy to the President, policy director for the full Senate Banking Committee, and as policy advisor to House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., all “examples of his deep financial policy experience,” Simpson wrote.
“In those positions, America’s Credit Unions and its predecessor organizations worked closely with Mr. Crews and found him to be well versed in critical policy with an aptitude to swiftly understand and engage with our issues, which often impact underserved communities, families, and small businesses in America,” Simpson added.
Meeting with Crews in his current role at Treasury in April, America’s Credit Unions addressed interchange and modernization priorities. The letter notes “we have seen Mr. Crews continue as a thought leader on critical regulatory reform for credit unions and community financial institutions across the country.”
Crews is expected to testify before the Senate Banking Committee sometime this month. If cleared by the committee, his confirmation would head to the full Senate for a floor vote.
America’s Credit Unions supports a full, three-member board, but noted the legal challenges from dismissed board members should not impact Crews’ confirmation process.
