Veterans Day honors as credit union service continues year round
With nearly 200 defense credit unions across the country, and countless other credit unions with members and staff who are active and veteran military, service to members goes well beyond Veterans Day. In honor of Veterans Day and those who served, credit unions took part in events and recognized their own.
As part of its year-round support of the local military community, GECU employees served breakfast to El Paso veterans as part of the Veterans at Breakfast monthly gathering. Each month, GECU staff members volunteer to serve breakfast to attendees at the local American Legion. It’s a space for veterans to gather, socialize, network, discuss issues, and stay informed on matters affecting the veteran community.
“Supporting Veterans at Breakfast allows us to connect with and serve those who have given so much for our country. It’s a privilege for our team to participate and show our gratitude in a meaningful way,” said Gina Lewis, Director of Military and Veterans Affairs at GECU.
Other credit unions highlighted their staff members who are veterans, sharing their stories. Via Credit Union in Indiana took to social media to share their appreciation for all who have served, including two veterans on their team. Partners! Federal Credit Union used their website to recognize the 7% of American adults who are U.S. military veterans, including team members who reflected on their service.
“I will forever be humbled and grateful for the people I served with and the leaders who helped me along the way,” shared Daniel W., who served in the Navy and is now a manager of member education and development for the credit union.
Navy Federal Credit Union is supporting the Travis Manion Foundation’s Veterans in Service projects throughout November, encouraging members to volunteer, and hosting employee volunteer events at its Virginia, California and Florida campuses. Staff are making no-sew blankets for distribution by the Soldiers’ Angels organization, to help provide comfort to the military and veteran communities it serves.
“These nonprofit partnerships reflect the values Veterans represent—courage, character and selfless service—and strengthen our commitment through impactful give-back initiatives,” said Mehdi Dinia, vice president of membership and deposit operations at Navy Federal.
