Salem talks state of credit union DEI at NCUA summit

NCUA kicked off its third annual Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Summit Wednesday in Minneapolis. America’s Credit Unions Vice President of DEI Samira Salem presented Wednesday afternoon on the state of DEI in the credit union industry.

Salem presented an issue brief with results from a recent America’s Credit Unions survey on where credit union are on their journey, their DEI motivation, impact of any current pressures on DEI efforts, and how they are currently navigating their DEI strategies.

NCUA Chairman Todd Harper said in his opening remarks that credit unions “have both a statutory responsibility and a moral obligation” to facilitate economic mobility and help all Americans climb the economic ladder.

“If done correctly, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives can and will narrow the income gap, support a robust and growing middle class, advance equity, and make our democracy stronger and more resilient,” he said.

The summit continues Thursday.
