Face-to-face meetings with policymakers advance advocacy agenda

Relentless credit union advocacy from the entire credit union system helped secure the tax status in H.R. 1, and advocates are still engaging with members of Congress to advance the credit union advocacy agenda leading up to the August recess.

In advance of the vote, CrossState Credit Union Association met with Reps. Reps. Donald Norcross, D-N.J. 1, and Herb Conaway, D-N.J., 3, July 1 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The group encouraged both to reject any last-minute changes to the legislation that would alter the credit union tax status.

Rep. Chris Pappas, D-N.H., met with Cooperative Credit Union Association (CCUA), America’s Credit Unions, and advocates from multiple New Hampshire credit unions in the state’s first Congressional District earlier this month.

In a separate meeting with longtime credit union supporter Rep. Bill Keating, D-Mass., CCUA leaders were joined by SCU Credit Union CEO Glenn Parsons and Rockland Federal Credit Union President/CEO Kristin VanBeek. Keating reaffirmed his support for credit unions and shared updates on Congressional priorities going forward.

The August recess will provide more in-district opportunities to meet with lawmakers. When Congress comes back to Washington, D.C. – it will be time for America’s Credit Unions Congressional Caucus, Sept. 7-9.  Credit union advocates are encouraged to register now and plan to take part in Hill visits, advocacy-focused sessions, and help further shape the post-recess advocacy agenda.
