Grow credit union momentum by sharing your stories

Credit union advocates at every level helped build the strong advocacy momentum leading up to the August recess. Now that members of Congress are back in district, there are even more opportunities to engage. That effort back home is critical, wrote America’s Credit Unions President/CEO Jim Nussle in a CUInsight op-ed published Wednesday.

“With Congress back home for the August recess, it’s the perfect time to engage with federal lawmakers locally, thanking them for their support, and building on our momentum to achieve even more advocacy success this year,” he wrote. “Credit union stories make a real impact—we saw that firsthand in the fight to protect our tax status. When you show how you go above and beyond for your members, it proves to policymakers that credit unions are essential to both economic and community success.”

While much of the first half of the year was dedicated to securing the industry’s tax status with the Don’t Tax My Credit Union effort, credit unions also saw forward momentum in other issues. Credit union-supported bills moved forward with several signed into law, and now there is a strong focus on getting additional needed legislation across the finish line.

The America’s Credit Unions resource library is available to help members’ advocacy efforts to inform policymakers, including the latest statistics on the credit union difference.

“Congress needs constant reminders and reassurance that their constituents are the very same people that credit unions serve—the farmers, teachers, service members, veterans, first responders, and small business owners who keep America strong,” Nussle wrote.
