Simpson touts importance of advocacy on panel with lawmakers
America’s Credit Unions President/CEO Scott Simpson kicked off his first day leading the association in a panel highlighting the importance of advocacy. Joining him was U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, D-Calif., and California State Senate President Pro Tempore Mike McGuire Monday at an event hosted by Redwood Credit Union.
Simpson was invited to participate in the discussion by Redwood President/CEO Brett Martinez, who is a strong advocate for credit unions. Monday’s conversation focused on how credit unions can effectively engage with elected officials throughout all levels of government. Even amid the government shutdown, Simpson highlighted how strong engagement remains crucial as the industry advocates for policies that allow credit unions to best serve their members. Thompson and McGuire have championed credit union issues, helping empower the industry at both the federal and state levels.
In a message sent to America’s Credit Unions members Monday, Simpson noted one of his top priorities as he comes into the role is to connect with as many credit union members as possible—and he’s just getting started.
“America’s Credit Unions exists to be your voice in Congress, with regulators, and anywhere the future of cooperative finance is being shaped,” wrote Simpson. “Whether it’s protecting your right to serve, strengthening your ability to grow, or clearing a path for innovation, we’re here to make sure your needs, and your members’ needs, are front and center.”
