Stepping up amid crisis
Credit unions across the country rolled out extensive relief efforts during the federal government shutdown. A new post on the America’s Credit Unions Blog highlights Tinker Federal Credit Union’s efforts to process more than 3,200 transactions of refunding fees, doing skip-a-pays, or interest-only payments on loans, along with over $1 million in 0% interest payroll relief loans.
The Oklahoma credit union also expanded eligibility to anyone affected by the shutdown and paired financial assistance with community support, including food bank donations, turkey giveaways, and financial wellness workshops.
"We've always done this during the holidays to go out and give out gift cards at the grocery stores and the Turkey giveaways," said Dave Willis, Tinker Federal Credit Union president/CEO. "We just grew it this year, knowing that there was a lot of hardship going on right now."
