Simpson: Advocacy agenda provides clear path forward for movement

Working together, America’s Credit Unions, leagues, credit unions, and allies held the line in 2025, but work remains next year and beyond to ensure credit unions can continue to help members. America’s Credit Unions President/CEO Scott Simpson outlined how the 2026 advocacy agenda reflects credit unions’ needs and will leverage the movement’s unified voice in an op-ed published Monday.

“Our 2026 advocacy agenda focuses on three goals: advancing, empowering, and protecting the future of the credit union movement so more Americans can build financial security,” he wrote. “Achieving this will require unity. We must continue to advocate with a unified voice to ensure policymakers understand just how essential the cooperative finance model is to people and communities nationwide.”

Developed with the influence, insights, and voice of the entire credit union movement, the agenda will:

  • Advance policies to increase access, including modernizing field-of-membership rules, supporting responsible growth, increasing lending and investment capabilities, and strengthening charters;
  • Empower credit unions to meet member needs with the right tools in an environment where they can thrive, including the ability to innovate and combat fraud and scams;
  • Protect the credit union difference by securing the tax status, and calling regulatory burdens, and preserving what makes credit unions unique.
