Overview
Investment Certification Fundamentals eSchool provides credit union finance and investment professionals with a strong, credit union-specific foundation in investment portfolio management. Designed as the first step toward earning the Certified Credit Union Investments Professional (CCUIP) designation, this program builds essential knowledge around investment structures, risk and return fundamentals, and portfolio strategy.
Through expert-led sessions, participants will explore how investment portfolios are built and managed as a disciplined process. Attendees will also gain insight into governance expectations, regulatory considerations, and the roles brokers, dealers, and boards play in effective investment oversight. This eSchool prepares participants for the CCUIP Fundamentals Exam and sets the stage for continued learning through the Investment Certification School: Advanced.

Learning Objective: Understand the basic investment structures, the cash flows they provide, and the risks associated with these structures.
The candidate will gain a fundamental understanding of commonly held investments and the application of key financial characteristics. The following will be covered: basic investment structures, bullet–CD, treasury & agency, floating-rate securities, callable, and step-up structures.

Learning Objective: Evolve from a collegiate to a capital markets level understanding of key financial principles.
Learn key financial characteristics, the proper application, and common misapplications. The following will be covered: yield, spread, WAL, time value of money, durations (McCauley, modified, effective, spread), option-adjusted spread, and term structure of interest rates.

Learning Objective: Understand the benefits using benchmark investment portfolio and how it is developed.
Learn how to show the Board and ALCO the role the investment portfolio plays as part of the balance sheet, from first mitigating the net risk between shares and loans, generating returns, and aligning clear risk, return benchmarks based on balance sheet interest rate and liquidity risks.

Learning Objective: Understand how MBS pools are built, CMOs reapportion the cash flows of mortgage pools, factors that impact cash flow volatility and developing cash flow expectations.
The following will be covered: mortgage-backed securities, collateralized mortgage obligations, common issuers and implications, and key factors that should impact cash flow volatility and risk-adjusted returns.

All previously discussed issues come together as we review a comprehensive investment policy that incorporates credit risk, liquidity risk, interest rate risk, and concentration risk relative to the investment portfolio. During this session, you will learn how to customize an investment policy given the unique characteristics of your credit union.

A credit union portfolio manager will discuss one approach to identifying key relationships and the counterparty exposures that often misunderstood and overlooked.
June 4, 2026 | 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. CST
This review session will help prepare you for the Certified Credit Union Investments Professional (CCUIP) exam. Materials will be reviewed, and you may ask questions.
