Carolina credit unions share insights on operations, advocacy priorities

America's Credit Unions President/CEO Scott Simpson met with dozens of credit union leaders in South and North Carolina as part of his ongoing efforts to hear directly from members on their priorities to help inform the association's advocacy strategy and strengthen the system's unified voice.

The conversations were held in coordination with the Carolinas Credit Union League, whose President/CEO Dan Schline also participated along with other senior leaders from America's Credit Unions and the league.

"This week I had the opportunity to meet with credit union leaders in South and North Carolina. Our greatest strength is the unified credit union system and the real impact credit unions have in their communities," Simpson said. "These direct conversations reinforce that by allowing us to understand the challenges and opportunities credit unions face, and the nuances of them based on the unique characteristics of each credit union. I want to thank the credit unions for open dialogue with America's Credit Unions and the Carolinas Credit Union League to ensure our strategies reflect their needs. Serving as the industry's unified voice is a responsibility we do not take lightly, and creating proximity to our members ensures effective representation."

“At the end of the day, everything we do comes back to serving members,” Schline said. “Hearing directly from our CEOs ensures our advocacy remains grounded in the real needs of credit unions and the communities they serve across the Carolinas."

Over the course of three days, the group met with small, midsize, and large credit unions in each state during roundtables and visits to individual credit unions. They discussed a range of issues, including fraud, recent deregulatory efforts, mortgage and small business lending, credit union tax status, and more. The conversations demonstrated commitment to stronger advocacy engagement, and collaboration among credit union CEOs was evident.

Since starting his tenure as America's Credit Unions' president/CEO in November, Simpson has prioritized meeting with credit unions and leagues. He has held conversations with credit union CEOs of all asset sizes, joined league meetings, and attended events across the country to better understand the environment they are operating in, the support they need to thrive, and to strengthen collaboration and cooperation throughout the system.
