Year 2 | Commercial Credit Analyst Track

Course Description

The Year 2 Commercial Credit Analyst course focuses on the essential practices for evaluating and managing risks tied to commercial loans. Participants will utilize the 5 Cs of Credit to conduct thorough analyses and produce credit memoranda, applying these principles to both traditional commercial and industrial credit, as well as commercial real estate financing.

  • Tax return and financial statement analysis
  • Ratio analysis
  • UCA cash flow analysis
  • Global cash flow build-up and analysis
  • Analysis of various types of collateral, including real estate
  • Credit risk rating
     

Tools

Participants will learn skills and be provided tools to:

  • Understand and analyze tax returns and financial statements.
  • Conduct a ratio analysis and learn to utilize ratios within credit presentations and periodic reviews.
  • Understand the difference between EBITDA and UCA Cash Flow analysis and when to utilize each.
  • Understand risk ratings of credit.
  • Understand the components of a thorough credit memorandum. 
     

Learning Objectives & Outcomes

After attending this program, participants will be able to:

  • Define the primary components of the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement
  • Perform analytical spreading of financial statements and tax returns
  • Calculate key financial ratios and identify financial trends
  • Develop a working knowledge of collateral valuation methods
  • Measure analyzed credit characteristics in order to assign risk rating
  • Compose a credit approval document 
     

Audience

This course is intended for credit union staff interested in developing the skills required to complete financial analyses, assess associated risk, and construct a stand-alone credit approval document that enables readers to make a fully informed credit risk decision.

Prerequisites

Attending Year 1 and successfully completing the coursework and exam are required prior to registering for Year 2.

Designation Requirements

Attending Year 2 and successfully completing the corresponding exam is the second step required in attending all three years of the Business Lending Certification School to ultimately earn the designation.
