2025 policy priorities guiding advocacy in the new year

The 2025 America’s Credit Unions policy priorities, released Monday, focus on protecting, empowering, and advancing credit unions in the 119th Congress and beyond. The list of 17 priorities will guide the organization’s advocacy efforts throughout 2025.

“Our first year as America’s Credit Unions was a success in many ways, and it also showed us several opportunities to proactively seek legislative and regulatory improvements to ensure credit unions continue to thrive,” said America’s Credit Unions President/CEO Jim Nussle. “As an organization, in partnership with leagues and credit unions, we brought to Washington one unified voice for the credit union industry and the more than 140 million Americans who choose credit unions as their trusted financial institution. Our advocates, from the federal level to state legislatures, are ready to protect, empower, and advance credit unions.”

Direct feedback from credit union members and America’s Credit Unions stakeholders helped America’s Credit Unions formulate the priorities, with the new administration and subsequent change in leadership at the federal financial regulators playing an integral role.

Priorities fall under the three key areas of protect, empower and advance, and include:

Protect

  • Protect the credit union tax status
  • Stop shifting liabilities for fraud
  • Protect interchange
  • Address right-sized rules and so-called “junk fees"
  • Reform the CFPB’s structure
  • Prevent unlimited NCUA authority
  • Support an independent regulatory regime

Empower
