Understanding demographic trends can help credit unions identify growth opportunities, design targeted financial services, and support technology adoption.  In the first 2025 edition of Economic Update, America’s Credit Unions Senior Economist Dawit Kebede shares insights on this topic using Equifax’s Analytic Dataset, a credit report data sample containing over 23 million consumers. 

This data reveals that the median credit union member’s age has remained consistent over two decades contrary to a result from the most cited Federal Reserve survey.  There are slight age differences in borrowers of certain loan products between credit unions and banks.

Kebede highlights how Project Zip Code allows for better estimates of credit unions’ economic and financial contributions at the Federal and state congressional district level, an essential measure for advocacy efforts.
