America’s Credit Unions readies resources as government shutdown deadline approaches

With the Sept. 30 deadline for federal government funding approaching and the Senate in recess until Sept. 29, preparations are underway for a potential government shutdown. If Congress fails to pass a bill funding the federal government that can be signed into law by 11:59 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday, a government shutdown would be triggered, and preparations are currently underway.

Credit unions historically step up and offer assistance for members whose financial well-being could be impacted by a shutdown, and America’s Credit Unions will support the industry with resources, advocacy to restore funding, and more.

However, there are other factors that could make this shutdown different from previous funding gaps, including the possibility of permanent government layoffs. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Russ Vought issued a memo Wednesday, telling federal agency heads to prepare reduction-in-force plans for programs not legally required to continue. OMB has confirmed that the reduction in force will not take place if Congress successfully passes a clean short-term funding bill prior to the deadline.

The House passed a continuing resolution last week to fund the government through Nov. 21, but that bill and another version failed in the Senate before both chambers went into recess this week.
