Engagement ongoing with key policymakers over recess

Leagues and credit unions are keeping up the movement’s momentum with a unified advocacy strategy during the August recess by meeting with key policymakers in-district, laying the groundwork for action when Congress returns in September.

House Ways and Means Committee Jason Smith, R-Mo., who heads up the House’s tax writing committee and previously served on a credit union board, met with Missouri credit union leaders this month. Century Credit Union President/CEO Josh Wallace, whose credit union serves members in Smith’s district, joined with the Missouri Credit Union Association—a division of the Cornerstone League—in Cape Girardeau to meet with Smith.

This face-to-face interaction allowed Wallace to personally share how Century Credit Union supported families when a plant in Smith’s district announced 400 layoffs, dispatching staff directly to the site to help affected workers review budgets, set up payment plans, and navigate immediate financial needs.

Wallace recounted this story during the tax fight in an op-ed in the Southeast Missourian, which covers a large part of Smith’s district.

The Illinois Credit Union League hosted Rep. Sean Casten, D-Ill., at its Springfield office last week. A strong credit union supporter and House Financial Services Committee member, Casten visited NuMark Credit Union during the spring recess, and met with the Illinois Credit Union League in Washington, D.C., in February.

Founders Credit Union hosted Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., at its Lancaster, S.C., headquarters last week, to discuss issues impacting credit unions and the members and communities they serve.

Credit unions and leagues are encouraged to share photos and details about their Congressional visits in-district to communications@americascreditunions.org.
