Laying the groundwork with lawmakers

Building relationships is a key part of the credit union movement, and that includes lawmakers.  Whether it's in–district during the August recess, or in Washington, D.C. for a Hike the Hill – making those connections is essential.

With Congressional Caucus around the corner, attendees are making plans to meet directly with lawmakers along with the great speakers and high-level general sessions focused on today’s most pressing federal issues.

CommunityAmerica Credit Union Director of Community and Government Relations Michael O’Brien understands how consistently making time to meet with lawmakers is important to the long-term success for credit unions.

“I think it’s really important to lay the groundwork. You don’t want to go in and meet a lawmaker for the very first time and have an ask, to ask them to do something for you when you really don’t have a relationship with them. So, digging that well far in advance is so important,” says O’Brien. “You’re establishing credibility, you’re establishing a relationship, and it’s also a good way to start to build trust.”
