Simpson: Credit unions’ powerful identity resonates with members, policymakers
Incoming America’s Credit Unions President/CEO Scott Simpson loves the passion at every level of the credit union movement, and that is its greatest strength. Speaking on the Shared Accounts podcast, Simpson shares his journey from Utah’s Credit Unions, California’s Credit Unions, and Nevada’s Credit Unions to the national trade association, his vision for leadership, and more.
“We are called to defend and try to enhance the credit union operating environment,” he said, adding that the strength of credit union advocacy has seen it succeed many times (most recently with this year’s tax battle) despite being “wildly out-resourced by those who would just as soon see us go away.”
Credit unions “have a ground game, we’re diffuse. We reach into every Congressional district in the country. We’ve got powerful brand identity with our credit unions that extends all the way to their membership. The membership loves the fact that they’ve got access to their credit union, and it just so happens many of those members are registered voters. And policymakers care about that.”
Ensuring a unified voice for the movement and amplifying it to advance credit union priorities will be a top priority, he added.
