Simpson highlights industry’s impact, assistance amid shutdown

House and Senate leaders heard directly from the new leader of America’s Credit Unions Tuesday, as he touted the immense support credit unions are providing their members amid the government shutdown.

In his first message to Congress, President/CEO Scott Simpson shared with lawmakers examples of the work credit unions are doing around the country to provide assistance to impacted members.

“The support being offered by credit unions during this government shutdown is not an anomaly. This is what credit unions always do,” Simpson wrote. “But our industry’s efforts are exemplified in times of economic crisis, as credit unions reinforce their focus on serving members. Our nation’s credit unions will continue to do all they can to help those impacted by the shutdown as long as they need it.”

Simpson provided specific examples from credit unions and encouraged lawmakers to utilize America’s Credit Unions Government Shutdown Assistance page to see the credit union difference in action, as well as to share resources with constituents and Congressional staffers in need of assistance themselves.

While Congress continues to debate a continuing resolution, Simpson called on them to “come together and pass a funding measure to reopen the federal government. We urge lawmakers to take this step and end the uncertainty.”
